You know what to do,
but do you... do it?
Regardless whether it’s in fitness or marketing,
most replies to surveys about what hinders our success come down to one simple thing: Getting yourself to take the right action, at this point in time. Not "later," not "soon."
What works for you when blocks happen? Do you know? Do you have an inner toolkit- a set of responses you’ve honed through practice- that work for you? When do you step up and get it done? When to you get derailed?
Here's a great discovery of something that works, for me.
The other day I was teetering on the edge of derail. After a disappointing interaction, I felt the wind just punched out of my sails. I curled up, literally, for a little while. It was so easy to imagine sleeping…
I’d made a commitment, and yet it was so easy to imagine letting it just drift away. After all, it was mainly to me, this commitment: few others would even notice if I let it go.
But some would… my close friends, my accountability and mastermind partners. Me. I mulled on the impact this would have on me. Not good. What about others for whom I was stepping into service for, originally? Would I just forget their needs and how I could be of help? Would I ignore my calling?
Rather than get involved with some very tempting diversions (I tried… such as pulling out my beads, recalling how soothing colors are for me)… I pushed the distractions aside. I pulled out a big piece of sketch paper and decided to simply “act as if.” To act as if I were going to follow through, for a bit.
I had no desire to do this. Yet I decided to make a mind map planning the steps ahead, as if I really might step up and keep my commitment. A small, simple thing.
And what do you think happened? The mind map, putting it out in front of me, was ALCHEMY! My energy shifted completely, thanks to one simple, half-hearted, small tenacious act.
“Act as if,” I told myself. “Do it in some small way. You do not have to complete this. Don’t look beyond this step, this little thing.” The screaming meanies of overwhelm, the whispering naysay nasties got really quiet. This act surprised them into silence. Then, the voice of my vision could be heard again. She became quite audible, as she suggested, “Zola, we might just do this. Look at this… it is possible. You know the steps. Just begin now. Just begin.”
It’s related to the loud, bright call from Goddess Nike shouting, “Just Do it!” But there was no force here, no harsh demands. For my psyche, this worked. I got it done.
How? First, by remembering who my commitments really are for. And by having a circle of friends and a mastermind group who support my vision. I knew the accountability question would arise. (Not as a fearful thought, but as a knowing that I wouldn’t be allowed to fully shirk the truth.)
Take the actions, NOW. But remember, equally important is being prepared for moments when the wind gets sucked out of your sails. That will happen, and your inner and outer toolkit makes or breaks everything. Because tenacity and perseverance build confidence.
You will trust yourself again. You know you have the muscles and intent. You will do this. But, you will not do it “alone.” That’s the reality. “Alone” is a vacuum that cannot sustain true intent and the power to move forward anywhere like the energy and love of true associates and friends. Thanks to the friends, who know who you are.
